The Burr Campaign Releases New TV Ad: “Staci”

Watch Here

Raleigh, NC— The Burr campaign today released a new TV ad, “Staci,” that features Gold Star wife Staci Chiomento talking about the sacrifice her husband made for our country and how she’s taking a stand against Deborah Ross’ dangerous agenda. The ad will begin airing immediately on statewide broadcast.

The ad opens with Chiomento, in a direct to camera address, holding a picture of her husband who lost his life serving our country in Afghanistan. Chiomento criticizes Ross for supporting the burning of the American flag, calling American intelligence agencies “dangerous,” supporting the disastrous Iran Nuclear Deal, and being a rubber stamp for the Obama administration’s weak national security policies. Chiomento concludes by saying, “I understand sacrifice, we simply cannot trust Deborah Ross’ dangerous agenda.”

Background:

ROSS DEFENDED THE BURNING OF THE AMERICAN FLAG SAYING IT WAS “A FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT”

In June 1995, Ross Criticized A House Of Representatives Vote To Ban Flag Burning Saying “We Have A First Amendment Right To Burn The Flag As Symbolic Speech.” “The House voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to amend the Constitution to protect the American flag, brushing aside protests that flag desecration – no matter how objectionable – should be considered free speech. The amendment would give state and federal authorities the power to impose criminal sanctions against people convicted of physically desecrating the flag, although it made no attempt to define desecration. … Deborah Ross, legal director for the N.C. chapter of the ACLU, said the amendment was a waste of time and resources. ‘We have a First Amendment right to burn the flag as symbolic speech,’ Ross said. ‘The Constitution protects that right. To spend time and effort on this is ridiculous. Why not pass an amendment to help poor people or promote education in this country? This won’t make one bit of difference.’” (David Hess, “Amendment On Burning Flag Easily Passes House,” Charlotte Observer, 6/29/95)

In 2000, The North Carolina ACLU’s Website Celebrated “A Tremendous Victory For Free Speech And The Bill Of Rights” When Congress Failed To Pass A Constitutional Amendment To Ban Desecration Of The Flag. “In a tremendous victory for free speech and the Bill of Rights, Senator Edwards joined 36 of his colleagues in resoundingly defeating a proposed constitutional amendment to ban desecration of the flag!” (North Carolina ACLU’s Website via Internet Archive,www.acluofnorthcarolina.org, Cache Date 6/12/00)

ROSS ADDED THAT IT WOULD MAKE INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES “ALL THE MORE DANGEROUS”

Just Months After The 9/11 Attacks, Ross’ North Carolina ACLU Said That The PATRIOT Act Would Make Intelligence Agencies “All The More Dangerous Given The New Technological Tools At The Government’s Disposal.” “We should never forget the historical abuses that have taken place in the name of national security. The government has illegally watched and investigated law-abiding citizens and immigrants and branded people who disagree with government policies as enemies. The new federal law will unleash the intelligence agencies which are all the more dangerous given the new technological tools at the government’s disposal.” (Winter 2001 NC ACLU Newsletter, Winter 2001)

ROSS HAS SAID THE U.S. SHOULD PURSUE “SOPHISTICATED DIPLOMACY”

VIDEO – In March 2016, Ross Said We Need To Use The “Most Sophisticated Diplomacy,” Intelligence And Military To “Take Care Of ISIS Off Of Our Shores.”ROSS: “The first thing I want your viewers to know, is that I care tremendously about their safety, and we need to take care of ISIS off of our shores. And that means using the most sophisticated military, the most sophisticated intelligence, and the most sophisticated diplomacy to isolate them and take them out where they are.” (WGHP, 3/11/16)

ROSS SUPPORTS THE IRAN DEAL AND HAS BEEN ENDORSED BY J STREET

Ross Supports The Iran Nuclear Deal And “Will Oppose Any Legislation That Will Undermine [It’s] Implementation.” “As a first-term senator, Ross intends to protect equal opportunity, especially in the areas of women’s health and equal wages, and access to higher education.  She will support women’s rights at home and abroad, including support for the Women, Peace, and Security agenda. She is committed to diplomacy and believes there should be more resources in our national budget for non-military solutions in international engagement, and will oppose any legislation that will undermine the implementation of the Iran Deal.”

Ross Has Been Endorsed By J Street. “Ross is a strong ally of the pro-Israel, pro-peace movement. She supported the administration’s Iran nuclear deal and has been a consistent advocate of a two-state solution that would protect Israel’s Jewish and democratic identity.” (“Deborah Ross,” J Street PAC, Accessed 8/4/16)
