Burr touts affordable, accessible coverage

"'(Republicans) believe that any plan to be successful has to provide the access to every American to affordable, accessible coverage,' Burr said. 'Even if that means providing some type of financial stipend to individuals that don't have the resources to purchase their health insurances by themselves.'" More ...

GOP Senate doctors on health care road show

"Pointing to his own health care reform legislation co-sponsored with Republican Sen. Richard Burr of North Carolina and rejected by Democrats during a committee markup, Coburn rejected the suggestion that Republicans have not offered their own affirmative proposals for reforming the nation's health care system.

Coburn said the reform legislation he co-sponsored would increase coverage and save government at the state and federal levels billions of dollars over the first seven years." More ...

Aeropsace tour exites Burr

"U.S. Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., visited Kinston on Thursday for a presentation and tour of Spirit AeroSystems at the Global TransPark.

The visit - which gave Spirit officials the chance to show Burr the company’s progress since breaking ground in September 2008 and share future plans - began inside the TransPark Center on U.S. 58 with an hour-long PowerPoint display and ended with a trip to the facility construction site on Rouse Road.

The 500,000-square-foot manufacturing facility, where Spirit workers will design and build the center fuselage frame and wing structures for Airbus’ new A350 Xtra Wide-Body passenger aircraft, will be where many of the 1,100 employees attracted by Spirit will go to work once it opens next year.

'I think this is exciting,' Burr said. 'This is a sign of life in Eastern North Carolina.'This can be a stepping stone to even bigger things in aerospace for not just the Global TransPark, but for all of Eastern North Carolina.'" More ...

Burr Addresses Health Care Reform

U.S. Sen. Richard Burr urged American citizens to remain active in the health care reform process Wednesday, saying they have the power to reshape the debate in Washington.

Burr was the keynote speaker at the Moore County Chamber of Commerce's "State of Federal Government" luncheon at the Pinehurst Member's Club. He spoke on the economy and health care reform, both hot-button issues right now. He called health care reform "the single biggest issue [he] will deal with in [his] career."

"The impact should come from you," he said. "What's going to happen over the next 60 days, I can't tell you. But I will tell you this, If the American people stay engaged in this process, then they will drastically change the way this debate happens and where we end up." More ...

Republican Sen. Richard Burr said he expects the Democratic-backed health care plan to quickly pass the U.S. House, but said it could face a fight in

Republican Sen. Richard Burr said he expects the Democratic-backed health care plan to quickly pass the U.S. House, but said it could face a fight in the Senate.

"We are at half time. We are going into September, which is the second half of the game," Burr told reporters after addressing a group of doctors at the N.C Medical Society Friday morning, Rob Christensen reports.

"They (supporters) intend to launch a $160 million ad campaign," said Burr, a strong opponent of legislation backed by President Barack Obama and Democratic congressional leaders. "I certainly can't forecast what the outcome of that is. I think the future of the legislation depends on how engaged the American people will be in the process. If August is over and there are no more town meetings and they sort of forget about it, (the legislation) with $160 million ad campaign probably gets the votes it needs."

Burr said he expects the U.S. House to pass the measure largely unchanged by Sept. 15, but the measure could face a more difficult road in the Senate.

He said if the Senate Democratic Senate leadership tries to push the bill through with a simple majority of 51 votes, rather than a filibuster-majority of 60 votes, "it would cause a backlash in this country from the American people that I think would be life altering to a lot of members of Congress."

Burr, who was first elected to Congress during the Republican Revolution in 1994, said said he saw some parallels in voter anger.

"I don't believe all the outrage towards Washington is just health care," Burr said. "It is the culmination of what they have seen over the last eight months: that's ownership of private companies, that's picking winners and losers on the part of the federal government, it's the incredible way we have spent money and how fast the debt has grown.

"This has all culminated when health care was the issue that hit before the August break," Burr said. "If you got back and look at the town meetings, the outrage was not all about health care. It was about government. I believe health care could be the fuse, if ignited through circumventing the rules of the Senate, could ignite an explosion bigger than 1994 potentially."

[Audio] Burr talks healthcare reform

Senator Richard Burr comments on the current health care debate with Bill LuMaye.

Tuesday, August 25, 2009

N.C. senators divided on health care proposals

"We've seen the response in the town hall meetings," Burr said. "I don't think this is anything other than once the national debate started, the American people saying: How does this affect me and my family?"

Burr argued that 16 million people could lose the health-care policy they now purchase and be forced to buy their policies through state exchanges. He said those Medicare recipients who purchase Medicare Advantage could lose their supplemental coverage.

"Kay and I agree on one thing -- it is not sustainable in its current fashion," Burr said. "We have to do health-care reform. But I want to warn you tonight: Do the wrong thing and our children and our grandchildren will spend a generation trying to figure out how to reverse what we've done."

Agribusiness banquet focuses on health care reform

"RALEIGH - The public option of the proposal for health care reform was a key topic at the annual North Carolina Agribusiness Council Banquet in Raleigh Monday Night.

Sens. Richard Burr and Kay Hagan talked about the president's plan with members of the council, and voters at the banquet were listening closely."

Upcoming Healthcare Events

I wanted to let you know about 2 very important events coming up this week related to healthcare.

The first event is a live call in show on UNC-TV concerning the issue of healthcare. This event will be on Tuesday, August 25th at 9:00pm. I will be joined by Congressmen Watt, Etheridge, Price and Miller. I encourage you to call into the show to not only ask me about where I stand on the issue of healthcare, but where these other elected officials stand as well. You may submit questions in advance at, www.unctv.org, or by calling the program live at 1-877-885-4371.

You may or may not have heard about a debate challenge I issued to the 3 potential Democratic primary candidates for the U.S. Senate last week. Recently I received an invitation to debate Kenneth Lewis on the issue of healthcare. I responded to Mr. Lewis by stating I would be more than happy to debate on the issue of healthcare as long as Cal Cunningham and Secretary of State Elaine Marshall would participate as well. The people of North Carolina deserve to hear where the potential Democratic nominees stand on this crucial issue.

I asked my staff to reach out to the North Carolina Medical Society to see if they would be willing to host this debate. The Medial Society agreed to host the debate as long as all 3 would attend. Unfortunately, my office received word from Mr. Cunningham that he would not participate and we did not hear back from Secretary Marshall. Mr. Lewis did agree and I want to commend him for his willingness to let North Carolinians know where he stands on this issue. However, I made it clear that I would not engage in political stunts designed to elevate one candidate over the other. Instead I will be participating in a forum with Medical Society members to share with them my plan for healthcare. To learn more about my plan for healthcare please visit, www.burrforsenate.com.

Senator: 'Public option' needs to go

"HICKORY - Republican Sen. Richard Burr said the White House's insistence on a government-run insurance plan has been the chief obstacle to formulating workable health-care overhaul legislation.

The North Carolina lawmaker said he is hopeful that public outcry over the Obama administration's proposed "public option" for health insurance will soften the White House's position, paving the way for legislation that could be approved during this congressional session.

'If that insistence on the public option breaks down, we'll see where we get in moving the ball down the field,' Burr said." More ...

Civility and respect rule at bipartisan town hall meeting

Breaking a pattern of raucous encounters across the country, more than 600 people Monday attended a town hall meeting marked by civility, substance and even bipartisanship.

Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr and Democratic U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell joined two Cabinet secretaries in fielding questions from an overflow audience at Richmond Community College.

Virtually every question involved education and rural development, not the hot button health care issue that has polarized such meetings elsewhere.

"We've got a tremendous health care challenge. I don't think I want to get into that today," Burr said in the middle of the 90-minute meeting. More ...

Burr says debate reflects health care frustration

"If I had to boil it down to one thing, American families don't have unlimited budgets and they haven't seen Washington show any restraint," Burr said. "I think this has culminated with the issue of health care and the platform was fairly easy to go out and use health care to launch other things." More ...

The week in review

Cash for Clunkers

I voted against the additional $2 billion for Cash for Clunkers, which would triple the program’s size, when it became clear that the congressional leadership was “simply” going to restore--in an upcoming appropriations bill--the stimulus funding used for the expansion. While this program is understandably popular with would-be car buyers and Detroit, it is hard to justify the additional deficit spending. We are sticking future taxpayers with the bill so that consumers can upgrade their car today.

Judge Sonia Sotomayer

The Senate has confirmed Judge Sotomayor as a Justice on the Supreme Court. After much consideration I decided to vote against Judge Sotomayor's nomination to the Supreme Court. Judge Sotomayer has impressive academic credentials, a lengthy judicial record, and a personal story that is inspiring to many. However, I could not support her nomination because of concerns with her ability to adhere to long-standing case precedent and apply the law according to a strict interpretation of the Constitution. I am also troubled by her decisions in cases where she appears to have relied on something other than well-settled law to come to a decision.

Military Spouse Residency Relief Act

Also this week, I offered several amendments to the National Defense Authorization Act, including the Military Spouse Residency Relief Act, which was approved by voice vote. I am very pleased by the passage of this amendment, which allows spouses of service members to maintain residency in their home state. Under current law, active-duty personnel can keep a home state of residence no matter where military orders send them. However, military spouses do not have these rights, even though they move right along with their service member. This means that every time they move, military spouses have to change their license plates and registrations, voter registration, and even file state and local tax returns in a different state than their active-duty spouse.

Preserving Public Access to Cape Hatteras Beaches Act

I have introduced legislation to ensure our state’s residents continue have access to our scenic treasures. The Preserving Public Access to Cape Hatteras Beaches Act would reinstate the Interim Management Strategy governing off-road vehicle use on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. This bill would ensure that citizens can still access North Carolina’s wonderful beaches while continuing to address environmental concerns.

Democrat health plan a threat to N.C.

"Republican U.S. Sen. Richard Burr says that health-care legislation being negotiated in the House and Senate has potential to 'decimate' North Carolina's economy.

Pointing to research at North Carolina universities as well as pharmaceutical, biological and medical-device companies in the state, Burr said that all could be threatened if dollars for innovation, research and development dry up in a new system.

'I think it's safe to say North Carolina is one of a handful of states whose economy could be decimated based upon the wrong health-care plan,' Burr said in an interview with The Associated Press."
